SUMMARY:Giving Innovation Summit 2026: Charitable Giving and Philanthropy in Turbulent Times
DESCRIPTION:Charitable giving and philanthropy have long been central to conceptions of American national identity\, understood since the nation’s founding to be vital to the maintenance of a robust civil society and of democratic life. From mutual aid networks to community foundations and digital crowdfunding\, Americans have consistently turned to voluntary giving to meet shared needs and express shared values. As the United States marks its 250th anniversary\, this tradition of charitable giving invites both celebration and honest examination as it maintains deep continuities and experiences profound changes. The past decade has brought significant pressure to bear on the landscape of giving: Shifting tax policy has altered incentives for everyday donors\, public funding gaps have increased need\, and declining institutional trust has changed where and how people choose to give. At the same time\, new models of collective and community-led giving are emerging in response. \nAs part of its 30th anniversary\, the Urban Institute’s Center on Nonprofits and Philanthropy brings together researchers\, philanthropic leaders\, policymakers\, and sector infrastructure actors to examine the evolving landscape of charitable giving and philanthropy in its fifth Giving Innovation Summit. As part of this convening\, we will explore the evolution of the infrastructure of everyday and collective giving\, probe the policy pressures reshaping charitable behavior today\, and examine how the charitable and philanthropic sectors are responding to widening gaps in public funding. Together\, we will ask what these transformations mean for the future of giving in America. \nSpeakers: \n\nSara Barba\, Managing Partner\, Integer\nJon Bergdoll\, Associate Director of Data Partnerships\, Lilly Family School of Philanthropy\, Indiana University Indianapolis\nDaniel Cueto-Villalobos\, Doctoral Candidate and Graduate Instructor\, Sociology\, University of Minnesota Twin Cities\nAsha Curran\, Chief Executive Officer\, GivingTuesday\nMichael Layton\, W.K. SUMMARY:From Data Frustrations to Better Decisions🔒
DESCRIPTION:Your organization may have data\, dashboards\, platforms\, evaluations\, or reporting processes\, but are they actually helping people make better decisions? \nIn many organizations\, data and technology efforts stall not because the tools are wrong\, but because the learning system around them is incomplete. This 90-minute interactive session from DARO will help participants think beyond tools and better understand what it takes to build a learning system that supports action. \nDARO will introduce its Learning System framework and four key stages: \n\nDiscovery\nDesign\nLaunch\nOperation\n\nUsing real organizational examples from IPA members\, DARO will walk through the kinds of questions to ask at each stage\, what needs to be in place\, and what outputs can help move work from frustration to action. \nYou may also work in small groups to apply the framework to their own data\, technology\, evaluation\, or decision-making challenges. \nThis training is free for Indiana Philanthropy Alliance members.

SUMMARY:Help or Harm: AI in Grantmaking - Rural & Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Is AI leveling the field or raising the bar?\nMany Midwest funders are noticing a surge in grant applications – and wondering whether AI is helping or harming the philanthropic process. At the same time\, rural nonprofits – and often nonprofits in other geographies – consistently cite limited capacity as one of their biggest barriers to engaging in the grantmaking process. \nThis session shares emerging research and real-world observations on how AI is being used throughout the nonprofit sector and how funders are experiencing the resulting shifts in volume\, clarity\, storytelling\, and capacity across rural nonprofits. Together\, we’ll explore both sides of the equation: AI as a potential equalizer for small\, often volunteer-driven rural organizations\, and AI as a force that may overwhelm funder systems or obscure genuine organizational needs. \nThe conversation will focus on what’s actionable now: responsible AI use\, equity considerations\, and how funders can adapt their processes to maintain trust\, discernment\, and alignment with community priorities. Participants will leave with practical strategies and a clearer sense of where AI can support their work – and where human discernment matters most. \nGrounded in the realities of rural philanthropy\, this session will include information transferable to any geographic setting. \nSession Objectives\n\nExamine the emerging impacts of AI adoption in rural grant seeking and rural grantmaking.\nShare early findings from research on how funders perceive increased application volume\, shifts in proposal quality\, and potential inequities created or reduced by AI.\nIdentify practical\, right-sized actions rural funders – and those working in other geographies – can take to integrate AI responsibly\, reduce administrative burdens\, and maintain human-centered philanthropic judgment.\n\nFree for IPA members. $50 for non-members.

SUMMARY:Giving For Impact – Level 1\, Day 2
DESCRIPTION:As a donor\, do you ever question whether your donations are having the impact you expect?  Do you often feel like you are just writing checks to organizations because they asked or because it makes you feel good? \nOver the past eight years\, our program\, Giving for Impact\, has made a tremendous difference in how people donate and partner with nonprofits. \nThe sole purpose of our training is to equip attendees with knowledge and help in developing relationships with the nonprofit community.  The training encourages individuals to learn more about who they are as donors by teaching them to identify their personal mission\, vision\, and core values to create charitable impact.  As a donor\, they will be equipped to know how to find fulfillment in their giving. \nOnce an individual understands who they are as a donor\, the program will build on that understanding by equipping them with knowledge of what a strong nonprofit organization looks like.  Donors will learn how to ask the right questions when meeting with a nonprofit and how to determine if they are actually making a difference.  Participants will learn what a healthy nonprofit partnership looks like and be able to create their own personal plan and philosophy of giving. \nThe 2026 Level I sessions are planned for March 5 and April 9. \nGiving for Impact is a great training program for individual donors as well as family foundations\, financial advisors\, wealth managers\, CPA’s\, estate planners\, attorneys or trust advisors. Regardless if you donate $50.00 per year or $50\,000.00 per year\, Giving for Impact is for anyone who desires to have a clearer understanding of themselves as a donor and has a desire to make a greater impact through their giving. \nJamie D. Levy\, from JDLevy & Associates\, an international speaker\, consultant\, and adjunct professor at Indiana University School of Philanthropy\, IU Fund Raising School\, and IU Paul H. O’Neill School of Public and Environment Affairs (IU SPEA)\, will guide you through understanding the strategies involved in making wise decisions regarding your philanthropic giving.  To learn more about Mr. Levy and JDLevy & Associates visit their website www.JDLevyAssociates.com \nThis training is supported through donations from Jim and Carol Havens\, JDLevy & Associates\, Community Foundation Alliance\, and the Welborn Baptist Foundation.  These donations allow Giving for Impact to offer this series at no cost to you. \nIf you have questions or would like additional information please do not hesitate to contact: Carol Havens havenscs@gmail.com  812-453-8654  Cara Steinkuhl carasteinkuhl@gmail.com 812-455-4321 or Jamie Levy jlevy@jdlevyassociates.com

SUMMARY:Giving For Impact
DESCRIPTION:Level I\, Session I\nGiving for Impact – Evansville   |   Impact matters because simply doing good work does not equal changed lives \nAs a donor\, do you ever question whether your donations are having the impact you expect? \nJamie D.
