As a funder, your foundation plays an important role in strengthening our region’s nonprofit ecosystem. This checklist is designed to help you get to know nonprofit organizations more deeply — their mission, leadership, financial health, organizational capacity, and long-term sustainability. Your organization may already have these conversations in place in a non-formal setting. This can be a great asset to craft to fit your organization’s needs, especially within the granting process.
Use this guide as a conversation starter and a learning tool. It’s not intended to serve as a formal evaluation or scoring tool, but as a framework for exploration. The goal is to help you:
- Identify where funding, partnership, connections, or other support could help build a nonprofit’s capacity and sustainability.
- Recognize organizations already demonstrating strong practices, learning, and impact.
By using this guide, your foundation is investing not only in individual organizations, but in the shared growth, effectiveness, and resilience of our community.
This conversation guide will lead you through seven key areas to help you understand a nonprofit on a deeper level. These topics represent areas where strong organizations continually learn, adapt, and strengthen:
- Organization Board & Leadership
- Strategic Planning
- Finance
- Fundraising
- Human Resources
- Evaluation & Outcomes
- Communication & Marketing
Before your conversation, take a little time to learn about the organization beyond what they have shared with you. Explore its website and social media, review available financial or annual reports through their 990, talk with others familiar with its work, and read recent news or stories about its impact. This background can help create a more meaningful, informed, and relationship-centered discussion.
