This series participation includes two members (board president or designated board member and ED), partner through this cohort-based learning experience, building communication effectiveness and implementation strength. In Sustain Abilities, the focus is on more engaged boards, building board culture, deeper donor relationships, with a financial plan developed by the end of the program, working toward long-term sustainability. This session is 3.1.

The Board Champions 201-level program provides an opportunity for Board members to explore the habits and practices of effective governance, reflect on their strengths, and emerge more energized, engaged, and prepared to excel.
The most successful nonprofit boards have a collaborative team culture, working as a governing team in partnership with the executive. The starting point for building this culture involves a shared understanding of the work and the line between management and governance. Participants will learn to create shared understandings of the principles of board membership and how to assess the success of their organization’s board. Board dynamics (the interpersonal relations between board members and senior staff) have a high level of importance to the board’s governing effectiveness. Exceptional boards govern in constructive partnership with the chief executive and staff, recognizing the effectiveness of this relationship is interdependent. This session explains how boards can create a culture that will foster engagement, trust and collaboration, as well as provide clarity around respective roles for a constructive partnership to build genuine mutual respect.
