SAVI Data Literacy Skills Training – Module 2A: Finding Existing Data

This VIRTUAL workshop will help you apply the skills learned in other workshops to your own real-world, data-informed project. The workshop instructor will reach out to you prior to the workshop to discuss your project and to help you identify the data and other information you will need to bring to this workshop to be successful.

This offering is hosted by The Polis Center, the creators of SAVI. Through this offering, they will use the Central Indiana map, but the lessons remain the same for Southern Indiana region.

Answering the questions necessary to achieve goals requires locating and using the right data and tools. This workshop covers the strengths, weaknesses, and costs of readily available data sets, including SAVI, so you have the information you need to locate the data that is right for you. Hands-on activities explore the many tools that SAVI provides for locating and exploring data.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND? This workshop is perfect for anyone that wants to learn techniques for finding the right data to answer questions.

  • Benefits and challenges associated with several types of data
  • Where to access readily available data sources
  • How to balance needs and priorities to choose the right dataset
  • How to choose a substitute dataset when the indicator you want to measure is not available

USEFUL KNOWLEDGE TO HAVE BEFORE ATTENDING

No prior knowledge is required, but you may find it useful to attend the Module 1A: Framing the Problem workshop before attending this workshop. In that workshop you learn how to frame problems with specific and measurable questions that can help you meet your goals.
